It’s *my* Namespace

Mine!

It’s actually quite hard to read the The Disposition of Names in an XML Namespace above the sound of thumping tubs in the background, and I was rather worried that the balance had been struck rather too finely between evolution and intelligent design until I hit:

As a general rule, resources on the web can and do change. In the absence of an explicit statement, one cannot infer that a namespace is immutable.

Huzzah! So to state the bleeding obvious, namespaces are all about ownership. They’re a land-grab. I always put spuds in your weekly vegetable box, but don’t send it back if I happen to slip you the odd free carrot as well. Feel free to use or ignore them!

LOMO Action Sampler

Action Sampler

I bought a LOMO Action Sampler with some money my mum gave me for my birthday and used it for some family fun last Sunday. Strange having to wait a week to see the results and then having to scan them in for flickr.

Menton, February 2006

Picture 1-3

Menton, February 2006 is a set of 300 odd photos taken during during a nice weekend with the Mrs followed by a week of fun and games at The W3C Technical Plenary. I need to write more, and post fewer pictures :)

Thaumetopoeidae

processionary caterpillars

So Jonathan and I were geocaching when we encountered the strangest sight, line after line of caterpillars nose to tail, and moving at quite a lick. Needless to say pictures were taken!

Freedom is Slavery

Disinfectant

If you’re reading this from work, then you’re lucky enough not to have an employer stupid enough to use the websense filter. As of this morning, whatfettle is categorised as ‘an inappropriate message board or club’. They also apparently block flickr because it contains ‘pornography’, which rather misses the point. Of course you’d expect any company whose stock in trade is ‘innovation’ or ‘communication’ to never consider enlisting a Ministry of Truth to keep its staff ignorant. But you’d be wrong.

It’s dead, Jim

Dead-Jim

Kudos to all involved in finally getting around to publishing the SOAP 1.2 binding for WSDL 1.1 but .. well .. if you have met me, you may know my personal opinion of the WS-I. I’m afraid it’s an organisation whose primary focus is on marketing itself. Maybe they should work more on delivering the reality rather than selling the illusion of Web services interoperability. Now, at last, we have tangible evidence of how useful Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and SAP find it as a place to work together. So where is the IP shelter and errata process for this ad-hoc work?

Update: I’m reminded that even though the WS-I isn’t capable of producing new work anymore, this kind of stuff will be parachuted in to be kissed with the trusty branding iron, which is why their marketing machine is so important. Even a dead cat may bounce.
